Cajun - a person of any of the communities in the bayou areas of southern Louisiana formed by descendants of French Canadians
Mardi Gras - translated to "Fat Tuesday," it is the name of a celebration (and indulgence) before the Catholic season of Lent

Crescent City - another nickname for the city of New Orleans
N'awlins - a faster way to say, "New Orleans"
da Parish - "the Parish," instead of counties,
Louisiana has parishes. Usually, da Parish refers to Chalmette - a suburb just outide of New Orleans
Creole - a person who descended from the colonial settlers of Louisiana, especially those of French, Spanish, African, and/or Native American descent
Dressed - a term that implies that lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise is added
"Fixin' to" - a faster way to say, "fixing to," meaning "about to," or "going to"

Gumbo Ya-ya - an expression that is used to describe when everyone is talking at the same time
Hurricane Party - exactly what it sounds
like; after New Orleanians batten down the hatches, a hurricane warning can turn into a social event. If it's not predicted to be too bad, they often throw parties to wait out the storm together
"It don' madda" - a faster way to say, "It doesn't matter."
Voodoo - a form of witchcraft
Vignette - a common style of New Orleans art, often sketches or paintings
"Throw me somethin' mista" - a phrase often shouted to Krewes to ask for throws
Throws - trinkets, such as beads, souvenir cups, or coins that Krewes toss out to parade watchers
Yat - a greeting derived from "Where y'at?" It is also a term used to refer to a true New Orleanian

Yatspeak - the unique cultural dialect and way of speaking prevalent in New Orleans

made to celebrate the coming of the Three Kings. It's made of a simple ring of dough and topped with colorful sugar sprinkles in
green, purple, and gold. Sometimes, a tiny plastic baby is hidden in the cake, and the person who finds it gets to throw the next King Cake Party.
